Chinese officials, facing a barrage of questions from bereaved parents and angry citizens, say they will launch an investigation into why so many schools were toppled by last week’s earthquake.

The high-stakes state exams measure campus’ achievement each year. Getting students to show up is a major concern; dull pencils and the wrong type of scratch paper can create havoc as well.

Five-foot-two Erica O’Brien pushes a tall stack of gray cartons across the floor, straining as if they were full of coal, not tests. The office on the top floor of Banning High School is stuffy, even though it’s only 6 a.m. But when the phone rings, O’Brien answers affably.

Visits to art, nature and science exhibits are rare as more hours are devoted to studying for required English, math tests. But some venues are adapting their offerings.

Scores of second-graders scrambled through the airy Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, huddling inside simulators to feel the shaking of an earthquake, building mini-ski jumps to learn about speed and shaping wet sand into riverbanks to observe erosion. The hands-on experiences allowed them to test theories they had only read about in textbooks or heard about from teachers.

California school districts deciding how to cope with state budget cuts

L.A. Unified and others consider spending reductions amid uncertainty about their funding. Balanced budgets must be submitted by June 30.

Like many school systems throughout the state, Los Angeles Unified School District officials spent Thursday reviewing financial projections that will include cutting programs and services because Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s revised budget does not provide enough funding.

The One Laptop per Child project is about to find out whether Microsoft Corp. — a rival the nonprofit organization once derided — is the solution to its problems in providing inexpensive computers to children in the developing world.

Cal State trustees OK 10% hike in student fees

The increase, which will go into effect this fall, will bring undergraduate costs to at least $3,048 a year. The UC regents are also expected to approve higher fees today.

As expected, trustees of the California State University today approved a plan to raise student fees by 10% for the 23-campus system. The increase will affect undergraduates this coming fall and raise fees by $276.

Los Angeles County prosecutors were sharply critical Monday of L.A. school district Supt. David L. Brewer’s decision to send two high school administrators back to work on campus after they were criminally charged with failing to report a student’s claims that she was sexually abused by a substitute teacher.

Locke High sends a message: No more disturbances

Conflict-resolution teams and tight security helped ease jitters at Locke High School on Monday, the first school day following the roving, half-hour-long melee last week that involved 600 students and required more than 100 police officers to defuse.
