Sony Ericsson Preps Investors for Gloomy Q2

Sony Ericsson, the world’s fifth-largest maker of mobile phones, warned Friday that its second-quarter profit and sales figures would miss forecasts due to a combination of lower demand for higher-profit handsets and product delays. The company — a joint venture between consumer electronics giant Sony and communications gear maker Ericsson — cited moderating demand for mid- and high-end handsets as well as difficulty in getting new products to market during the quarter as planned.

So when the 52-year-old marketing professional wanted to learn a new knitting stitch, she turned to the Web. “I searched for ‘knit bobble stitch’ on Google and I found a video of someone doing it,” said Rossman, who lives in the Detroit area. “It was perfect for me.” The Web has become the place where people go to learn new tricks.

Global Ethics 101

A few months ago, I spent some time with students at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business. Instead of simply asking questions about managing people and hitting numbers, the students asked what it meant to build a responsible and ethical corporation in the 21st century, in an increasingly globalized world. I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised by their interest in business ethics.

Microsoft’s Hyper-V Finally Shows Up to Virtualization Party

Microsoft’s new hypervisor-based server virtualization software, Hyper-V, is now available for download, and it’s several weeks ahead of “schedule” — though it’s also months late. Microsoft previously wanted to deliver Hyper-V with Windows Server 2008. In any event, Hyper-V is here, and it’s real.

Yahoo is setting up a new chain of command amid the turmoil triggered by the embattled Internet icon’s snub of Microsoft’s $47.5 billion takeover bid. Under the new pecking order announced Thursday, Yahoo executive vice presidents Hilary Schneider and Ash Patel are being given expanded responsibilities over the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company’s products and sales teams.

Industry Players Outline Rules for Online Health Records

Google and Microsoft have teamed with Intuit, WebMD and a consortium of more than 100 healthcare providers, insurers and consumer and privacy groups to develop a framework of practices governing online personal health record services. Under the leadership of the Markle Foundation, the Connecting for Health guidelines are an effort by PHR service proponents to establish a common set of principles.
